Mont-Saint-Michel

Founded by Saint Aubert in the year 709 AD and perched on the top of a steep granite rock that becomes an island 13 or 14 times a year. This former Benedictine Abbey is a must see on any visit to Normandy. Narrow cobbled streets of the picturesque village of Mont-Saint-Michel lead up to this marvel of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, that was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979. The imposing structure that we see there today has been welcoming pilgrims and visitors for the best part of one thousand years. It was constructed initially built between the latter part of the tenth century and the fifteenth century and was extensively renovated at the end of the nineteenth century. It is not only steeped in history but also provides some lovely views of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and the surrounding countryside.
